What is recorded here
Caol Ila Distillery was founded in 1846 beside the Sound of Islay, where ships could bring supplies and carry whisky away. A remote workers' settlement grew around the site, and later owners expanded production. Most nineteenth-century buildings were replaced during a major rebuilding from 1972, but the shore location, warehouses and continued distilling preserve its industrial purpose.
What this place is
Caol Ila is a large malt-whisky distillery on a steep shore, with still house, warehouses, pier remains and service buildings.
People and events
Hector Henderson founded it in 1846, later firms expanded the works and a major rebuilding in the 1970s transformed production.
How it was used
Sea transport supported early work, while malt was mashed, fermented and distilled before casks went to warehouses or mainland blenders.
What survives
The dramatic shore setting, some older fabric, warehouses, production buildings and working relationship with the Sound of Islay remain.
Why it mattered
Caol Ila mattered because marine transport created a remote industry that survived through rebuilding to become one of Islay's largest distilleries.
