Caltragh Childrens Burial Gd. (Disused)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Caltragh Childrens Burial Gd. (Disused) lies hidden beneath overgrowth in County Galway, Ireland, where local information places the last burial near 1890. Children died there, parents carried them there, and the earth closed over small bodies while the village continued breathing around the loss. The grass has erased the shape of the place, but it has not erased the fact that tiny lives ended and were given up inside that enclosure.
Within an enclosure (GA085-005002-). According to local information, the last burial occurred c. 1890. Due to overgrowth, no visible surface traces were noted. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
