What is recorded here
Cairnbulg Castle stands on a cut-down motte in Aberdeenshire, its stone keep rising from a mound older than the walls themselves. Bruce gave the land to John Ross in 1306, the Frasers took it in 1375, and debt forced the rename in 1615. A hidden turnpike stair still drops into a prison pit within the masonry, while a round tower with splayed gunloops guards the southeast corner. John Duthie rebuilt the ruined halves in 1896, joining them into one inhabited house that keeps the old bones beneath its new skin.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Cairnbulg Castle as Motte (medieval)(possible), Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Cairnbulg Castle, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, was built by the Maxwell family in the late 13th or early 14th century. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the border region during the frequent conflicts between Scotland and England.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
