Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cairn is a 228-acre townland in County Cavan where prehistoric stones still mark the ground before McKiernan clansmen shaped it into life. Sithric Carrach carried the place in his very name, suggesting he lived there before rising to chief, while later grants moved the land through Scottish grooms and English deputies. The churn of plantations and leases did not erase the identity hidden in the rock; it only proved that people kept returning to the same unusual ground.
Marked 'Carn' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. At the location indicated, there is a scatter of c. forty small and medium-sized stones which may formerly have belonged to a cairn. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
