What is recorded here
Cairn stands on the NW spur of Drung Hill in County Kerry, commanding panoramic views of Dingle Bay. Tradition links this site to the inauguration of Florence MacCarthy as MacCarthy More in 1600. The irregular stones rise 2.65m high, incorporating a sheepfold and a fragment of drystone wall.
This cairn is located on top of the NW spur of Drung Hill, some 230m WNW of the cairn and ogham stone at Gleensk/Kilkeehagh (KE063-012----). Its siting commands panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and of Dingle Bay to N. Irregularly shaped, the cairn measures 9m NE-SW x 9.5m NW-SE, rising to a maximum height of 2.65m at W. It is entirely composed of stones that are irregular in shape and of considerable variety in size. A short and poorly preserved stretch of a retaining wall-face of drystone construction is preserved at SW, and a sheepfold is incorporated into its E side. Delap suggested that this site is the 'Cahircanaway' where Florence MacCarthy was inaugurated as MacCarthy More in 1600 (1913, 162).
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 387. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
