Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Eight stone cairns are scattered across the southern foothills of Miskish Mountain, marking a forgotten boundary or burial ground on the bog. This gorse-choked circle rises forty centimetres above the black earth, waiting for rain to reveal what human hands arranged. The upland grass sways around them, hiding a cluster of ancient choices made before written memory.
In rough upland grazing, on blanket bog, on a S-facing slope on the S foothills of Miskish Mountain. One of a cluster of eight cairns (CO114-081002-; CO114-081003-; CO114-081004-; CO114-081005-; CO114-081006-; CO114-081007-; CO114-081008-). This gorse- and sod-covered subcircular cairn (2.2m N-S x 2m E-W; H 0.4m) protrudes above the blanket bog. Another cairn (CO114-081002-) lies c. 13m to the SE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
