Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Carran is a small Burren village where Michael Cusack was born and later helped found the Gaelic Athletic Association. The name means the cairn, and the place still carries that idea: a marked point on open limestone country. Around it are old church ruins, a living church, rocky pasture and nearby monuments that have drawn people for centuries. Carran is not large, but it is a birthplace for Irish sport and a useful gateway into the strange beauty of the Burren.
On a slight rise on a plateau, in an area of rough pasture, hazel and exposed limestone pavement. This small conical cairn appears to be relatively modern in date. A possible wedge tomb lies c. 12m to the NE and there is an enclosure c. 20m to the NNW. Compiled by: Olive Alcock and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 7 June 2022
A small conical cairn, possibly medieval or later in date, located near a possible wedge tomb; its function and wider significance are unclear due to limited identification and context.
