Clearance cairns elsewhere mark removed field stones; this is one of them in County Galway. Buildable land grew when people lifted rocks from soil and stacked them somewhere they would not cut ankles or break ploughshares. That somewhere may have been a border, a road edge or a forgotten corner of a townland. The stones are not decoration. They are the shape made by repeated human choices about where earth should be clean and where rock should gather.
