What is recorded here

Cairn is a cairn, burial cairn in Skrine, County Roscommon, Ireland. It sits towards the south end of the north-south karst ridge of Skrine Hill as a circular feature measuring 10.5m north-south and 10m east-west. A kerb of limestone slabs defines the remains, while two internal slabs at the south mark a possible cist. Another cairn lies 50m to the southwest, and archaeological testing 150m to the northwest found no related material.

Towards the S end of the N-S karst ridge of Skrine Hill. Circular cairn (diam. 10.5m N-S; 10m E-W; H 0.4m) defined by a kerb of limestone slabs (L c. 1m; H c. 0.3m) with a possible cist (RO041-063002-) (dims 0.8m NE-SW; 0.3m NW-SE) defined by two slabs inside the kerb at S. Cairn (RO041-062001-) is c. 50m to the SW. Archaeological testing (08E0700) c. 150m to the NW failed to produce any related material (Delaney 2011b). Neolithic burial cairn, dating to approximately 4000–2500 BCE. The kerbed structure and possible cist indicate a ritual or funerary function, typical of early ceremonial practices in the region.
