Cahernamweela

In elevated flat scrub-covered pasture close to the edge of a ravine to the SE. Overlooked by higher ground from W to NNE with clear views from NE to SW. Within a multiperiod field system (CL005-227004-). Hachured and named ‘Cahernamweela’ on the 1839 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. A circular cashel (20m N-S; 21m E-W) defined by a partially collapsed stone wall (int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1-1.5m; Wth 1.15-1.2m) partially surrounded by a rock-cut fosse from N to S and from WSW to W. Inner and outer wall-facing survives intermittently. The outer wall-facing is largely extant between the N and SE and between SSW and W, but has significantly collapsed from W to NNW. A small section of inner wall-facing survives at the N. A faced entrance gap with a collapsed lintel is present at ESE. There are recent breaks in the wall at NNE and NE. The interior is flat with the low foundations of a building (CL005-154001-) along its SSE edge, which was described by Westropp as a ‘well-marked hut-site, a semicircle, inside the wall and adjoining the gateway’ (1896-1901, 674).    Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell   Date of upload: 21 October 2025
