Caherduff Cave holds two collapsed chambered passages cut into the heart of a Mayo ringfort. Built with dry stone rather than dug from living rock, the chambers may have served as storage, refuge or a hidden place for rituals during storms. They stand infilled and broken now, yet the deliberate shape suggests people wanted the earth to swallow them briefly before returning them to daylight.
