Caherberneen is a ruined cashel on a Clare hill where the boundary between two townlands still curves around its scarped edge. Its flat slab wall stands barely a metre high now, yet the circle remains clear enough to walk inside and look out over hazel, rock and distant pasture. People may have lived there, fenced it, forgotten it or simply refused to build upon it. The land kept the shape anyway.

On a slightly raised area of rough pasture surrounded by hazel and rocky scrub, with good views in all directions. On the boundary between Berneens and Poulnabrucky townlands and within a multiperiod field system (CL005-227004-). Hachured and named ‘Caherberneen’ on the 1842 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps, and described by Westropp (1900-02, 423) as ‘a nearly levelled fort’. A circular cashel (diam. 16m) defined from SW to ESE by a wall (Wth 1.2m) with external facing (H 0.8-1.4m) of rough flat slabs, a short stretch of inner facing (H 0.05m) at NNW and a rubble core. Caherberneen is a circular stone ringfort, likely dating to the early medieval period (c. 500–1000 AD), situated on a raised area of rough pasture near the boundary of Berneens and Poulnabrucky. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy dwellings, and it may have been considered a place of supernatural significance in folklore.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
