Built by Edward I of England in the late 13th century, Caernarfon Castle was a key element in his strategy to subdue and govern Wales after the conquest of 1282. It is important as a symbol of English royal power and as a masterpiece of medieval military architecture, later used as a residence for the Prince of Wales.
