Rothesay Castle on the Isle of Bute was built in the late 13th century by King Alexander III of Scotland, later expanded by his successors, and is notable for its strategic role in Scottish medieval history and its well-preserved architecture. It is also remembered for the 20th-century war memorial located on its grounds.
