Burnt spread in Cashel Upper

In level rush-covered rough grazing near the foot of an E-facing pasture ridge. Visible in the N and W-facing section faces of a field drain where it turns sharply at right-angles from draining N to drain E to the N-flowing Clydagh River c. 230m away to the E. A layer of burnt stone and ash (T 0.4m) is traceable for c. 4m in the W-facing section of the drain (where it drains N) and is traceable for c. 10m in the contiguous N-facing section of the drain (where it drains E). It is not obviously visible in the opposite section faces of the drain. The layer is sealed below a layer of daub-like clay (T 0.2m) with a thin sod layer above (T 0.08m). A fulacht fia (MA070-106002-) lies c. 50m to the SSE and there is a second fulacht fia (MA070-106001-) c. 85m to the SE. Date of visit: 7-3-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan
