Bellavary Railway Station

Detached two-bay single-storey railway station master's house with half-dormer attic, opened 1894; extant 1895; occupied 1901, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay full-height gabled projecting end bay. Closed, 1963. Renovated to accommodate continued private residential use. Set in landscaped grounds on a slightly elevated site with red brick Running bond piers to perimeter having chevron- or saw tooth-detailed stepped capping.

A railway station master's house illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the extension of the Mayo Branch of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) line (opened 1868) by the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) Company with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling the contemporary Mallaranny Railway Station (1895-6), Mallaranny (see 31306607), confirmed by such attributes as the compact plan form; the construction in a vibrant mass-produced red brick; the uniform or near-uniform proportions of the openings on each floor; and the perforated timber work embellishing a high pitched gabled roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric: the introduction of replacement fittings to most of the openings, however, has not had a beneficial impact on the external expression or integrity of a railway station making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan setting.
