Burnt mound in Steelaun

Burnt mound

What is recorded here

Located in a shallow basin of damp, rush grown pasture that occupies a natural terrace on a SE-facing ridge slope. To NW the ground rises steeply to a ridge that dominates the skyline. This burnt mound is evident as a low roughly circular rise (8m NNW-SSE; c. 6m ENE-WSW) marked by grass-growth which is denser than elsewhere in the field. It appears to be composed of a concentration of small stones in a dark-grey/brown peaty soil, underlying a layer of peaty topsoil. There is a fulacht fia (MA015-084001-) c. 40m to SE, a possible burnt mound (MA015-084002-) 8m to ESE, and another fulacht fia (MA015-084004-) 8m to W. There is a fulacht fia (MA015-083----) 85m to S. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 December 2018
