Burnt mound in Ramstown Lower

Archaeological testing (12E0306) in an area of c. 7 ha (c. 18acres) c. 250m WSW of the core of Gorey town (WX007-033----) identified and excavated two fulachta fia, three burnt mounds, a pit and a corn-drying kiln. This rectangular spread of burnt mound material (dims 10m ENE-WSW; 5.5m NNW-SSE; max. T 0.5m) in Area F was c. 5m WSW of the fulacht fia (WX007-085004-) on the S side of an E-W steam or drain. Although it was rich in heat-affected stone with moderate charcoal inclusions there were no features beneath the mound and it probably relates to the activity at the fuacht fia. Burnt mound in Ramstown Lower is a prehistoric ritual or industrial site, dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age, associated with the fulachta fia complex. Its significance lies in providing evidence of domestic and possibly ceremonial activities in the Gorey area during the prehistoric period.
