Burnt mound in Morett

New monument discovered in 2003 during excavations of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Jonathan Dempsey of Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd under licence number 03E0623. This site was located in an area of deep fill and was protected and reburied and preserved in situ. Described as Morett 3 this site consists of an irregular spread of burnt mound material which measured 13m NNE - SSW by 3.5m by 0.2m thick. The spread consisted of friable black/brown clayey silt with frequent charcoal flecks, occasional charcoal fragments, heat-fractured subangular stones up to 0.1m in length and larger sub-rounded to subangular stones up to 0.3m in diameter. Lenses of black/brown plastic peat were also visible. The peat also appeared to underlie the site (Bennett 2006, 282). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007

A burnt mound; likely Bronze Age in date. It represents a common type of prehistoric ritual or industrial site, possibly used for heat-treated stone activities.
