Burnt mound in Moneylawn Lower

Excavated (E3475) during 2005 by L. Mckinstry as Site 10 at Moneylawn Lower, which was one of the excavations undertaken in advance of the construction of the N11 Arklow-Gorey link-road. Situated on a slight S-facing slope with a NW-SE stream c. 10m to the W, but an ancient channel (Wth 5-7m) was immedeatly to the W of the site. Six small spreads of burnt stone were excavated, and one small pit (diam. 0.5m; D 0.26m), but no artefacts were recovered. Burnt mound in Moneylawn Lower is a Neolithic ritual or industrial site, dating to approximately 4000–2500 BCE. Its significance lies in providing evidence of early human activity, possibly related to heat-treated stone processes or ceremonial practices.
