What is recorded here
Nine metres of fire-cracked stone and black clay waited beneath modern soil in Lisnamuck, preserving the heat and haste of people who stopped to transform water or earth before roads or markets existed. The mound survived because it sat just outside the digging line, buried under layers of new development rather than destroyed by it. It is not a display case or a named home, but a burnt edge of human activity that refused to vanish when the world above changed.
Archaeological monitoring of a large-scale commercial development in 2003 resulted in the identification of a number of archaeological features (Read 2006, 319-20). One brunt mound (dims. 9.1m x 8.4m) consisting of a subcircular area of fire-cracked stones in a charcoal-enriched black sandy clay was outside the immediate development area and was preserved in situ under five layers, including two layers of geotextile terram (Ó Maoldúin 2004).
