Burnt mound in Kilcaskan (bear By.)

At the base of an earthen field boundary on the E side of a road, on a S-facing slope. A layer (L 9m N-S; H 0.3m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil is exposed along the bottom of the field boundary and is, according to local information, the remains of a much larger mound which was encountered in the course of road widening many years ago. Most of the burnt material was spread on the surface of the road, which is now tarred over. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
