Burnt mound in Coolgarriv (magunihy By.)

In the course of archaeological monitoring in advance of proposed afforestation two separate areas of burnt and fractured stones in a charcoal-rich deposit were discovered. Both were found in the shallow drains which were excavated to allow for mounds of earth to facilitate tree planting. The first burnt spread (KE058-514----) was c. 6m to W of the N-S field boundary dividing the main field. The drain section revealed that the burnt material extended for 2.5m and had a depth of c. 0.4m. The second spread (KE058-515----) was discovered to the SE and had a deposit depth in section of c. 0.3m. Compiled by: Matt Kelleher Date of upload: 1 March 2016

Burnt mound in Coolgarriv is a prehistoric ritual or industrial site, likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age. Its significance lies in providing evidence of early land use and possible ceremonial activity in an otherwise poorly documented region.
