Burnt mound in Castlelands (carbery East (w.d.) By.)

A spread of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil (14.02m E-W; 7.5m N-S; D 0.8m) was discovered on the W side of a stream during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and was excavated in 2000. The spread was cut by two NW-SE drains, one of which was stone-built. No other features were uncovered and the excavator suggests that any trough or hearth associated with this spread are likely to be to the S, adjacent to the stream (Tobin 2001). Two possible burnt mounds (CO109-090001-, CO109-090003-) were also found c. 50m to the W and c. 110m to the E, respectively.
