Burnt mound in Ballybrannagh

'On top of a small dry rise in an otherwise very wet and marshy field, which affords spectacular views in all directions is a circular mound. This is located c.100m to the east of a stream which is a tributary of the River Lee. total dimensions of the site are 13.5m N-S by 13.5m E-W, the mound having a maximum height of 0.75m at south. This stone filled mound also contains burnt and blackened soil, and is now grass-covered. No trough area was apparent.' Burnt mound in Ballybrannagh is a Bronze Age ritual or industrial site, characterised by a circular mound containing heat-shattered stones. Its elevated position suggests it may have had ceremonial, domestic, or metallurgical functions within a wetland landscape.
