Burial mound in Turreen

In July 1982 human remains were discovered in the corner of a large field, on the grounds of a newly constructed house near Lanesborough. A mound (3m N-S; H 0.5m) had been levelled and the remains of four or five individuals were scattered throughout the disturbed soil. They had been lying in an east-west direction and no grave goods were found with them. There was no tradition of a church or graveyard in the immediate area (Cahill and Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 367-9). A Neolithic burial mound, dating to approximately 2500–2000 BCE. Its significance lies in the presence of multiple human remains, indicating a possible communal burial site from an early agrarian society in the region.
