Garrymore, near Aughrom, County Galway, hides a complete human burial just under half a metre below the sand. In March 1956 quarrying broke through that quiet layer, exposing a skull that belonged to nobody living and no known tradition. The sand pit stopped being dug, leaving the person and the question buried together again.

In March 1956 a human skull was discovered during quarrying operations at a sand-pit in Garrymore, near Aguhrim, Co. Galway. According to the landowner, the sand-pit had not been in use for c. 15 years. The find was reported to Kilconnell Garda Station, who informed the NMI. The Gardaí visited the site and reported that the remains were found at a depth of 0.46m and appeared to be a complete burial. At the NMI's request, the area was examined by the Gardaí for evidence of stones around the burial, but none were noticed and no associated artefacts were found.
