Abbey Street in Kilkenny has kept a buried man since at least the early 1900s. He lay head west in a shallow pit near the Black Abbey, waiting to be forgotten until a bulldoer opened the street again. The sudden violence of discovery fits the quiet violence of burial: both assume consent, and neither asks it.

At the W end of Abbey Street c. 20m S of the Black Abbey (KK019-026021-) and c. 50m W of the town wall. An extended inhumation in an unprotected pit aligned E-W, discovered during bulldozing operations. The articulated skeleton was an adult male with the head to the W. Apart from the extended inhumation, a portion of a skull and long bone were also recovered and a few fragments of an adult female skeleton.
