What is recorded here

Foulksrath Castle in County Kilkenny keeps a buried chorus. Wright recorded that skeletons emerged during farm work in 1853 and continued appearing around the castle and across the road. The land seems to give back what it swallowed, not all at once but in scraps, as if remembering by surprise.

In describing Foulksrath Castle (KK010-056001-), Wright (1885-6, 436) states that, 'In 1853, when the present farm offices were being constructed, a quantity of skeletons were found buried, in digging for gravel, not far from the bawn wall [KK010-056007-], and in the present farmyard', he goes on to say that, 'all around the castle, and in a grove at the other side of the road, numbers of human skeletons have come to light from time to time' (ibid. 438).
