Burial in Coolalough

The files of the National Museum of Ireland records that in November 1940 human remains were discovered during the construction of a new road by the Land Commission at Coolalough, near Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath (Cahill & Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 520). The exact location is not marked but the report states that the road was being made 'through the Coolalough Farm' which may be the same as Coolalough estate. This may be the same road as the road which runs northwards off the main Horseleap to Kilbeggan road. The remains were discovered at a depth of c. 0.6m below ground level in a pit approximately 1.8m long. According to the foreman on site, there were no associated artefacts or slabs in the vicinity.
