Burial in Castlequarter (clandonagh By.),galesquarter

Burial

What is recorded here

Cloonagh Castlequarter holds an unmarked burial where workers once pulled a bronze pin, a bronze belt, and a silver coin of Queen Elizabeth from the earth beside human bones. The discovery suggests a life ended during the reign of Elizabeth, reduced to a strange mixture of precious metal and mortal remains. Perhaps the person wore the belt at death, or perhaps a greedy hand buried treasure with the body. Either way, the quarter keeps a secret that resistance and desire can share one grave.
Unlocated burial within townland described in the History of the Queen's County as 'At Cullohill were found a curious bronze pin, a bronze belt, and a silver coin of Queen Elizabeth, with some human bones (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1981, 60). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
