Human remains came to light in November, 2010 on the seaward or SW-facing slope of Ballyteige Burrow sand-dune, c. 5km NW of Kilmore Quay. The remains had been buried half way between the high water mark and the top of the dune. They proved to be those of an adult male, and yielded a high precision C14 determination of 1917-18 AD (Pers. Com. Laureen Buckley; Victor Buckley, Oct. 2017), which suggests that the remains may be those of a sailor from a sinking during World War 1.
