Burial in An Fhothrach Mhór

Burial

What is recorded here

An Fhothrach Mhór: A road-side grave field west of Foheraghmore, recorded in 1939 but never found again. It vanished not through destruction but ordinary change: grass grown, stones buried, road widened, memory thinned. What is lost is not the bones but the chance to stand beside them and know they were kept.
According to An Seabhac (1939, 156) there appeared to be old graves at the side of the road a little W of the village of Foheraghmore. The site has not been located. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 204. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 4 August 2013
