What is recorded here
Burial Ground in Cullen, County Cork, holds the oldest stones of a lost parish church and the Heart stone where rounds began for the holy well. The graveyard stopped receiving buried bodies, but its wall still stands beside the village, carrying the shape of prayers repeated for centuries. St Laterian's name remains attached to the place, suggesting the ground was never ordinary even when the chapel disappeared.
On E side of Cullen village; St Laserian's well (14026) located outside NE angle. Rectangular graveyard (c. 65m N-S; c. 30m E-W) enclosed by stone wall; 1842 OS 6-inch map shows N boundary c. 35m to S of present line. According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 3, 89), walls repaired with stones from 'Cullen Monastery' (14386). No longer used for burial; several early 19th-century headstones noted, the earliest dated 1800. According to local tradition, burial place of St Laterian; mass celebrated here on St Laterian's day (25 July). Stone (13931) at entrance known as 'Heart stone' and 'Cloch na gCursa (The Stone of the Rounds)' (Bowman 1934, 269); rounds start at stone when visiting nearby holy well. Graveyard contained thatched chapel which was replaced by cruciform church (14754), immediately NE of graveyard, used up until 1930s as hall when it was demolished (Anon. 1984b). Probably location of ancient parish church of Cullen.
