Mortons has a hidden burial ground, not a landmark but a memory, and the county still turns it over at night. Whether it holds soldiers, children or lovers is no longer important; the earth knows the shape of every body it swallowed. Men have stood there with lanterns and left empty-handed, not because the truth is missing but because the dead do not want to be read, only witnessed.
