Burial Ground

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Kilcummin is a graveyard where the dead were buried before human activity covered them. It is no longer visible because the land was changed and the stones were lost beneath new building. What remains is the memory of a place where people once lived, died and were forgotten.
Kilcummin (Cill Chuimín Mhór/ the big church of Cuimín) Church: There is no trace of the church (KE035-052----) and burial ground (KE035-052001-) marked in the village of Kilcummin on the OS maps. In the 1840's a portion of the site was cultivated and, during the construction of houses on the remainder, tomb stones were uncovered (OSNB Killiney, 40). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 977. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
