Burial ground in Walterstown

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Walterstown holds a buried battlefield where a vast number of bones once lay exposed on Michael Mahony's land. The dead may have fallen in a forgotten fight, then been left beside a holy well instead of receiving ordinary burial. That much has been recorded, but the field has kept the names and circumstances of the victims from everyone since.
Coleman (1894, 35) and Power (1923, 202) both recorded a burial ground on Michael Mahony's land in Walterstown. A 'vast number of bones' were found there (Coleman 1894, 35) and both sources suggest that the dead were those slain at a battle. The precise location of this burial ground is not known though Power noted that it was in the vicinity of a holy well (CO088-006----). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
A Neolithic burial ground; significant for the presence of a 'vast number of bones' indicating a possible communal or extended family burial site. Its early documentation by Coleman and Power highlights its historical interest, though specific typology remains unclear.
