What is recorded here

Kilcumney in County Carlow was a small graveyard where people laid their dead to rest before the land changed. In 2006, workers dug a test hole and found one burial hidden beneath the grass. The rest has vanished, perhaps taken by ploughs, rain or time. What remains is a place where someone belonged, and the earth kept that person longer than it kept the stones.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 1 September 2010 Marked 'Site of Grave Yard' on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map. When inspected in the late 1980's the following was noted 'a small heap of field stones and several squared granite boulders, including two possible quoin stones lie on short stretch of foundation, visible as straight edge in grass'. An archaeological assessment carried out in 2006 noted that no surface traces of this burial ground remained, however test excavation uncovered a single burial. (Devine, E. 2009, 45)
