Burial ground in Kilbarraree

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Kilbarraree means church, and the name still points to Beausang's farm where the buried ground once lay. A road cut through the yard long ago, forcing men to dig out bones and carry them elsewhere. The dead did not vanish; they moved aside so wheels could roll across the skin of the world.
Site of cill (UCC), now farm yard. Power (1940, 25) states 'the site of the name-giving Cill is on Beausang's farm'. According to local information church yard existed spanning road; long ago, during constructin of road, bones were removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
