What is recorded here

Galloway Hill in Castlegrace is a burial ground where bones surfaced before the surveyors ever drew their lines. The hill still stands above the town, holding dead people back while the living walk past it. What was buried there and when remains unknown, but the ground itself has kept the secret for centuries.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Reference to bones having been found on Gallows Hill (OSL 1839, 126). Hill summit shown with hachures on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map, possibly denoting an antiquity.
