Burial ground in Blueford

Burial ground

What is recorded here

The Old Lios in Blueford, County Cork, is a children's burial ground where still-born infants rested inside a fulacht fiadh. This is a brutal tenderness: the community gave its lost babies the hot stones and deep earth of an ancient firing place rather than discarding them. The distinction between ordinary soil and marked loss still shadows the field.
According to Bowman (1934, 154), still-born children were buried in fulacht fiadh (10396) which is locally referred to as 'The Old Lios'. Known locally as a children's burial ground. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
