Two stones stand in the middle of a Bellewstown field, marking the buried bodies of two Cromwellian soldiers. They fell during the Siege of Drogheda in 1649 while their unit occupied nearby Bellewstown castle. The plain stones still divide the grass, remembering men who came from elsewhere to kill or be killed in a town that has spent centuries forgetting the shape of that violence.
