What is recorded here
Reilig na nGarlach, the Burial Place of the Infants, still lies hidden beneath wet marshy pasture in Coolcullen, County Kilkenny. A narrow ridge holds the memory of children who never drew breath, while the stream carries their absence toward the hills. The land keeps what people forgot, proving that even tiny lives leave heavy marks when kindness remembers them.
On a narrow ridge of land with a stream flowing E-W to the N, in roughly wet marshy pasture. There is a good view along the stream vale and up to the hillsides. The OS Letters (1839) mention, 'one little burial place of still-born infants, called Reilig na nGarlach, or the Burial Place of the Infants, which lies in the Townland of Coolcullen (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 14 (5)). On the 25-inch OS map it is indicated as a roughly D-shaped area (dims. c. 22.5m N-S; c. 30m E-W) extending westward from a field boundary running NE-SW. It is indicated by a dashed line, which suggests it was unenclosed. There are no surface features visible.
