Burial ground

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Lipstown in County Kildare holds a plain granite cross marking a square patch of ground that local farmers never ploughed because skulls and bones had surfaced nearby. Tradition claims the site buries victims of the Battle of Kilrush in 1642, though aerial cropmarks later revealed a small circular enclosure inside a much larger ecclesiastical boundary. The vanished religious complex suggests the battlefield story may be layered atop an older sacred landscape, with human death and devotion tangled beneath the grass.
