Burial Gd.

Within Muckross Abbey (friary KE066-081001-) grounds. The graveyard (c. 85m N-S; c. 55m E-W) is enclosed by a rubble stone wall (T 0.6m; H 2.6m) and occupies an irregular-shaped area adjacent to the S, W and N sides of Muckross Abbey (friary KE066-081001-). Older grave-markers, dating to the 18th century, are to the W. Some graves are marked with low uninscribed stones. De Latocnaye, writing in 1796-7, noted that interment at Muckross was confined to the S and E sides of the church while the W side was 'reserved for children dying without baptism, and for soldiers and strangers' (Stevenson 1984, 101). De Latocnaye also recorded 'penitences' performed here which 'consist in making the tour of the buildings a certain number of times while reciting prayers' (ibid.). According to the Muckross Newsletter (2001, 7), the graveyard was extended in 1858 and in 1881, the latter addition was probably to the SW.
