Bunown Castle is a two-storey limestone tower house standing on a rise in County Westmeath, built into the northeast corner of a walled enclosure and marked on the 1654-7 Down Survey map. Its pointed doorway is blocked, its slit windows still hold dressed stone jambs, and vegetation now blankets the abandoned farmyard around it. In 1641 the lands belonged to Pierce Dillon, an Irish Catholic, before the Cromwellian settlements broke them into smaller parcels for Protestant owners. The castle still stands at that junction of loss, occupation and memory, though a locked gateway keeps its interior beyond reach.
