Bullaun stone in Magheross

Bullaun stone

What is recorded here

Bullaun stones are meditation markers, not magic trays. In Magheross the sandstone cylinder stands beside the church path with one smooth basin, small enough for a palm to shadow. A person may have sat there in darkness, repeating a prayer until the stone felt warm. The church later gave the practice a address.
There is a bullaun stone in the graveyard of Magheross parish church (MO031-035001-) beside the path. It is a sandstone cylinder (ext. diam. 0.45m x 0.42m; H 0.33m plus) with a single basin (int. diam. 0.29m x 0.28m; D 0.2-0.24m). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 2 December, 2016
Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purification or as a font for holy water. Such stones are often associated with local saints and may have had both religious and folkloric significance in the community.
