What is recorded here
That is the origin of the name. Bullaun means a saint's cell or a place of prayer. The story says a holy person sat beside that stone and prayed until the rock wore a hole. The church and graveyard kept the place alive long after the person disappeared. The stone still holds the shape of patience.
This bullaun stone is lying against the S wall of the medieval church (GA009D014001-) in the graveyard (GA009D014002-) at the SE end of Inishbofin Island. The stone (0.8m E-W; 0.61m N-S) is subrectangular in plan and the basin is roughly circular (0.39m E-W; 0.37m N-S; D 0.29m). There is a large hole (0.16m E-W; 0.13m N-S) at the base of the basin.
