Bullaun stone in Hartwell Lower stands beside an early medieval burial, though its exact spot has slipped from human memory. The stone marks a place where people died and were remembered before written records existed. It may have guided mourners, marked a boundary, or simply remained visible because it differed from the surrounding earth. Whatever its purpose, it survived long enough to enter a file and reappear in a story about discovery.

In recounting the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a prehistoric burial (KD020-011----), Cahill and Sikora (2011, Vol. 1, 219) note that the NMI file mentions the presence of a bullaun stone in the vicinity of a second, early medieval burial (KD020-010----).
