Bullaun stone in Hartwell Lower

Bullaun stone

What is recorded here

Bullaun stone in Hartwell Lower stands beside an early medieval burial, though its exact spot has slipped from human memory. The stone marks a place where people died and were remembered before written records existed. It may have guided mourners, marked a boundary, or simply remained visible because it differed from the surrounding earth. Whatever its purpose, it survived long enough to enter a file and reappear in a story about discovery.
In recounting the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a prehistoric burial (KD020-011----), Cahill and Sikora (2011, Vol. 1, 219) note that the NMI file mentions the presence of a bullaun stone in the vicinity of a second, early medieval burial (KD020-010----). Its precise location is unknown. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date: 08 February 2013
